USING BLOGS AND SOCIAL BOOKMARKING

SESSION DESCRIPTION

This session is a follow-on to the earlier session (W101): Personal and Collaborative Learning Using Blogs and Social Bookmarking.

In this creation station session, you will use blog software to:

Create your own blog, create posts
Sign-up with an RSS reader and subscribe to blogs
Comment on other blogs and link to them
Sign-up on a social bookmarking tool, mark pages, share those pages with others in the session
Discuss how this might apply to personal and collaborative learning

The following are the basic steps that you will go through as part of the session:

Step 1 – Start Registration with Bloglines (3 minutes):

This step requires email confirmation. In other words, you will provide an email address as part of the sign-up process and must be able to click a link sent to that email address. If you cannot access the email account you provide via the web, you will need to partner on the blog reading portion of this exercise and should find a partner at this point who can read their emails from one of the computers.

Go to http://www.bloglines.com (I recommend you open this in a new window with the Right Mouse button)
Click "Sign up now - It's Free" - roughly in the middle of the page
Enter email address and other information
Periodically check to see if you got the verification email (we'll come back to check in a bit)

Step 2 - Getting Started with Your Own Blogger Blog (20 minutes):

Go to http://www.blogger.com (I recommend you open this in a new window with the Right Mouse button)
Scroll down to "Create Your Blog Now"
Name Your Blog – set your URL (write it down)
Give the instructor (Tony) your URL on a piece of paper
Choose a template
Create your first post
View Your Blog
Set Settings

Basic

Edit the Description

Publishing

Change Notify Weblogs to Yes

Comments

Change Who to - Anyone
Change to Show Backlinks
Change to Turn on Word Verification
Provide an email address for notifications

Go to Dashboard
Edit your Profile
Return to the Dashboard
Go to Settings and Edit Layout, but don't make changes

Step 3 – More Blog Reading (10 minutes):

Go to your Email to verify your registration from Bloglines
Go back to http://www.bloglines.com (I recommend you open this in a new window with the Right Mouse button)
Click on Feeds
Click Add
Add your feed URL

Your feed is going to be "http://.blogspot.com/atom.xml (you can see examples below on this page)

Choose Subscribe

Likely your RSS feed will not quite have updated yet on Bloglines, so add some of the blogs below

Click on that Feed
Subscribe to someone else’s feed

I've listed some feeds below

Click on those Feeds
Click through to someone's blog
Click to Add a comment

Step 4 – Social Bookmarking (15 minutes)

Go to http://del.icio.us
Register using your information
Click to Install the Buttons

Buttons should work

Search for interesting content related to this session, i.e., learning, blogs, social bookmarking
When you find an interesting page, tag it with TK2007 and whatever other tags you feel make sense
Search for pages tagged TK2007 to see what other people are bookmarking
Figure out something interesting to say in a post and a page to cite

Step 5 – More Blog Posting (10 minutes)
